December 13 ELA 30- Canadian Personalities and Values

Hey you dozen,

As you are hopefully aware we have been using literature and media to discover/uncover Canadian personalities and values...

We watched some comedy (Russell Peters, Danny Bhoy, This Hour has 22 Minutes) and are reading and sharing information found in Canadian essays. The presentations are due on the Tuesday following the break.

Tomorrow we will be viewing Roch Carrier's "The Sweater" a NFB film:

We will be reading his personal recollection (a Canadian classic!) entitled "The Hockey Sweater" in literary and storybook forms.

What Canadian values does this story reveal?

In the afternoon we will be reading an essay entitled "The Canadian Personality" by Bruce Hutchison.

  2. There are a number of different Canadian personalities presented throughout the story. To name a few, we see Canadian’s passion and love for hockey from the beginning right to the end of this story. The characters are constantly on the pond skating and enjoying the game, and when they are not out skating, they are cheering for their favourite hockey team and cutting out newspaper articles about their favourite player. We can also see how Canadian’s are set on their own ways. When Roch comes with a new sweater, rather than trying something new and letting him play with his blue and white sweater everyone pushes him aside and keeps things the way they were before.

  4. Many canadians love to play hockey, it just comes naturally to us. We are very competitive when it comes to hockey and many other sports. We will side with a team and support them strongly. If someone is against our team we will try to turn them into a follower of our team.

  5. The story "The Hockey Sweater" showed that as canadians are very loyal to our regions. Also that we are superficial about some things on our lives. Yes we can be laid back and easy going, but get us started on hockey, football or curling and you might have a fight on your hands. The story shows and exagerates our loyalty to our teams and the length that some people will go when it comes to hockey. some people look forward all year to the time when hockey starts and they get to take out their jerseys.

  6. Canadians are very passionate about their hockey teams. Roch all his life him and his friends looked up to the Montreal Canadiens and Maurice Richard. A Toronto Maple Leafs jersey was not welcome where he was from. You cheered for one team and one team only. Everyone depises little Roch for his jersey and no one respected him. Poor kid, having a mother do that to you, humiluate you like that.

  7. In the story there were Canadian and values that are revealed. The biggest value that the story talks about is that Canadians have is hockey. A personality that Canadians have is to have a role model that is a hockey player. The story shows that personalities and roles of Canadians focus on hockey.

  8. After reading this essay, we see many different Canadian personalities and values revealed. The biggest one shown is our patriotism. Though we may not all cheer for the same hockey team, we all proudly wear the Canadian maple leaf where ever we go. Just as Roch and his friends did with the Canadien jerseys. In the story, the coach and kids showed prejudice towards Roch when he came to the rink wearing the 'wrong' jersey. As Canadians, I think we judge sometimes without really knowing. We don't take the time to get to know people or things. Just judge as soon as we see.

  9. There were many Canadian personalities and values that were revealed in this story. We as Canadians love our hockey. We truly love and support our few Canadian hockey teams. Most children have a hero that they look up to and Roch’s was Maurice Richard. All he wanted was a Montreal Canadiens sweater with the number nine on it that fit him so that he could join his friends and look just like his hero. We are sometimes set in our ways and do not like change. Roch did not want to wear the Maple Leaf’s sweater because he would look different than the rest. He loved Maurice Richard and just wanted to look like him.

  10. Canadian's are passionate about their beliefs and values. We are loyal to what we believe and are all unique. Many canadians are into hockey and all support a different team. People go to games, cheer the teams on, wear the jerseys. Some people live by it. Even if you don't watch hockey you may play it. Hockey is the sport Canadains are known for playing. Even being on the ice brings thrill to canadians even if its without the stick and skating just to be on the ice.
